The Aerial Lift Bridge
This bridge connects Minnesota Point, a six mile sand spit that runs across the mouth of the harbour, with mainland Duluth, Minnesota. A section of the bridge raises 135 feet to allow boat passage through the Duluth Ship Canal. This canal is man made. Superior, Wisconsin has the natural canal on their side of the spit, and attempted, in court, to prevent Duluth from making a canal on their side. The Minnesotans, some armed only with shovels, dug, under the cover of darkness, to create the canal before the citizens of Superior could stop them in court. I wonder if there weren't a few Irish in that group!
